Popstar Pink has offered to pay the fines handed out to the Norwegian beach handball team for women – after they wore shorts instead of bikini bottoms.
The reigning European Handball Federation imposed a fine of $ 1,770 – $ 177 per player – for “wrong clothes” in the bronze medal match against Spain during the European Beach Handball Championship in Bulgaria.
“I’m very proud of the Norwegian female beach volleyball team FOR PROTECTING ALL THE SEXISTIC RULES ABOUT HER ” UNIFORM ”, the three-time Grammy Award winner said in a tweet,
“The European Handball Federation MUST BE FOUND BY SEXISM. Good with you, ladies. I will gladly pay your fines for you. Continue, ”the 41-year-old added.
The team expressed its gratitude to the singer “Get The Party Started”.
“Thank you very much for your support. We appreciate all the love we have received. You are the best, ”the players wrote on Instagram, where they posed for a team shot in their shorts.
The president of the Norwegian Volleyball Federation Eirik Sordahl said last week: “In 2021, it should not even be a problem.”
In a statement, the Norwegian Handball Federation said: “We are very proud of these girls who are beach handball players at the European Championships. They raised their voices and told us that enough is enough.
“We are the Norwegian Handball Federation and we stand behind you and support you. We will continue to fight to change the international regulations for clothing so that players can play in the clothing with which they are comfortable, ‘he added.
The bikini issue has been debated in beach sports circles for years because some players find it humiliating or just impractical.
The International Volleyball Federation has updated its own rules in 2012, and athletes participating in the sport at this month’s Olympics in Tokyo may choose to play in bikinis like swimsuits or shorts and T-shirts.
The Norwegian Handball Federation has reportedly campaigned to change the uniform rules of the IHF.
A Norwegian motion to change the rules will be discussed in the coming months.
