"Do not change your winning team." Especially important in soccer is the sporty principle. But it is also a way not only in sports but also in the hands of a very successful "lonely fighter," as long as he is positioned as a front runner and challenged this position. It has been used for decades like Toyota Corolla, the world's best-selling car. More than 45 million Japanese have produced eternal bestsellers since 1966, and small models have easily surpassed one million sales targets by 2018. Ford USA's pick-up F-150 with parade number two in worldwide sales can not go up and VW Golf does not. Europe's high-flyers are now third.
Auris has no chance against major competitor golf
Still, Toyota thought it needed to shake that principle. The Japanese have brought the newly developed Auris to the new 10th Corolla generation in 2006 because they are afraid that in Tokyo they will not be able to keep up with a rather reputable (but always reliable) corridor in the future compact boom market. The idea was to persuade Old Continent's customers again, as European standards were set at the design center in Belgium and Corolla succeeded Burnaston at the UK Toyota plant. He did not. Conversely: In direct comparison with major competitor golf, Auris has fallen significantly.
Temp passati. When I asked about the wrong decision at that time, I got the smile of Yasushi Uede's best cubic line. Toyota's chief engineer does not like to talk about it anymore today. Why? The co-owner Uede, along with Corolla's 12th generation, is presenting a new chapter to Toyota in every way. And it also applies to Europe. Not only because of the new (old) name.
"We have deployed 12 generations on an entirely new global platform where all of the Corolla model variants can be based in the future," explains Uede. He means a five-door hatchback, hatchback and touring sport. At the same time, he makes it clear that Toyota no longer allows experiments on Auris.
Nevertheless, there are exceptions, but it seems to be thoroughly positive for Swiss customers. The station wagon, which is called by Toyota Touring Sports, was styled in a Japanese design center in Zaventem, Belgium, not in Tokyo, so it was stressed by Kanei Toshio, station wagon director.
The combination looks dynamic and elegant.
Indeed, the Asia-Europe design team took full advantage of the opportunities provided by the new modular Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. Compared to the 4.37-meter short sedan, the station wagon stretched 28 centimeters. So the car enters the middle class. The wagon looks very flat and dynamic, but elegant. And in any case, it is more than just a variation of the hatchback. Not only in space.
It will take some time for Touring Sports to hit the road. The return of Corolla as Corolla will be held in Switzerland next spring. Initially, a short test was conducted on a pre-production model in early November, but the car was still a bit disguised. I gave an optical impression. Especially for Touring Sports.
Two complete hybrid versions
For the first time in a long history of Corolla, Toyota's top sellers of hybrid pioneers will adopt two driving methods that are economical and environmentally friendly. The fully-hybrid system with a 1.8-liter gasoline engine delivers 122 horsepower with a 180 hp 2.0 hp engine. Consumption is a 3.4- 3.8 liter Toyota, the reality is probably 5.0 to 5.5 liters as the first test drive has shown. Alternatively, Japan offers the Corolla as a 1.8-liter turbo gasoline engine with 120 hp. The price is not yet known.
