Seah Yam Meng said that if you say that you need more diversity at school, you will ultimately lead to unfamiliar students (a diverse student population at school, October 26).
It is frustrating to know that almost half of the disadvantaged students study at the same school, but it is not realistic to guarantee a diverse student population at school.
Because Singapore lacks natural resources, it is important to capitalize on information as a global competitiveness and relevance.
Placing diverse students at school can lead to elite schools that can be difficult to learn. This can interfere with people trying to learn more and try to learn at their own pace, which can affect the talents that these schools produce.
Also, if disadvantaged students are required to attend such schools, they may not be able to cope with the speed of learning normally, or they may fall behind and cause self-esteem, depression and suicidal ideation.
Perhaps we should consider how we will be affected by the needs of all students and the diverse student population.
