Every time you see someone yawning, so do you. Science has an explanation for why this happens to everyone all the time.
We yawn on average 20 times a day and at first people thought it was because the body needed an increased supply of oxygen. However, this is not the case.
Scientists explain the phenomenon of yawning by the fact that the organism needs an “alarm to wake up”. We yawn when we get bored or when we sleep, and we do that to wake up somehow.
“This has been proven, because 10-15 seconds after we gaze, our body experiences a reaction similar to after cafe intake,” says doctor Rejan Shagir.
When we talk about why we gape when we see others gape, science has a clear explanation.
“This is an empathic reaction of the organism. When we see someone yawning, we interpret it as a sign that we need to do the same,” the doctor explains.
It’s interesting that people will yawn when they see someone nearby doing it, instead of when they see a stranger. This is another proof of the theory that we do it for empathic reasons.
