This variant, which first appeared in India, is now present in 124 countries and territories, while the alpha strain from the United Kingdom is present in 180 countries, the beta strain of June Africa in 130, and the gamma strain from Brazil in 78 countries.
The WHO predicts that the delta strain will soon overtake other coronavirus variants and will be the dominant variant in the coming months.
The organization also predicts that the number of people infected with the coronavirus will exceed 200 million in the coming weeks.
The reasons given by the WHO are the strains of viruses being transmitted, the abolition of measures against the epidemic, greater social interaction and the insufficient number of vaccines.
