Young Werther ready for another crack at Incentivize

There will be no better time for Young Werther to put himself in the spotlight than the $ 5 million Caulfield Cup on Saturday.

It’s hard to believe that Young Werther has only one Geelong maiden success in the winning column, but he still has more than $ 850,000 banked for his connections in 10 starts.

Young Werther finished third over Denis Pagan-trained Johnny Get Angry in last year’s Victoria Derby before narrowly beating Explosive Jack in the Australian Derby in Sydney in April.

Young Werther may be a double Derby winner with luck, but O’Brien said Tavistock’s son has long been a Caulfield Cup hopeful for the stable.

It would just take a little time.

“We’ve really thought about this race since this time last year,” O’Brien said.

“He had a nice little campaign in Sydney and he was just touched in the Derby.

“He would always be a horse that would grow into a lovely four-year-old because he was pretty immature as a three-year-old.”

O’Brien quinella of the 2007 Caulfield Cup with Master O’Reilly and Douro Valley.

Master O’Reilly went into the Caulfield Cup after winning the Herbert Power Stakes, while Douro Valley performed strongly in the race after a good fourth in that year’s Turnbull Stakes.

Young Werther had his last Caulfield Cup run-up to the Turnbull Stakes on October 2, where he finished second as raging cup favorite Incentivize.

Young Werther ran Incentivize to a half length in the Turnbull Stakes.

O’Brien said the move to 2400m Young Werther would provide the opportunity to make up the half-length difference in the Caulfield Cup.

“The Turnbull is usually a very good form race focusing on both (Caulfield and Melbourne) Cup and Young Werther delivered a pretty solid run in the Turnbull,” said O’Brien.

“Incentivize is quite rightly the favorite, he comes from two really impressive victories of group 1, but it is a big handicap and we only have 52.5 kg.

“The 2400m is in our alley, and possibly even further.

“We are entering with a realistic chance of disturbing him, but we understand that it will not be easy.”

Young Werther jockey Daniel Moor said he respected the Young Werther Camp Incentivize, but he noted that the terrible pull of Barrier 18 of favorite was a help to his rivals.

“We are not afraid of encouragement, but very respectful, because he is a very good horse with freakish qualities,” said Moor.

“The lottery probably throws more of a wrench into the work of that camp than it does for us.

“We have a good tie and a light weight, so we’re part of the way.”

Young Werther has confirmed from $ 11 to $ 10 in TAB’s post-barrier betting market.

Incentivize has been reduced from $ 2.40 to $ 2.60, but will start favorably in the Caulfield Cup.
