British scientists at Oxford University are demanding tax on red meat. The introduction of such taxes can help health care in many countries. Scientists estimate that by 2020, around 2.4 million people worldwide are due to red meat consumption. It also provides $ 285 billion in public health care costs. She published her research in the scientific journal Plos One.
In partnership with research centers in the United States and the United Kingdom, we have set the optimal tax for red meat in 149 countries to best cover the costs of health care. Worldwide, the average rate of red meat has reached 16% and the western countries average 20%. For meat products, the tax rate should be much higher. The optimal tax rate for red meat is around $ 172 billion worldwide, which covers 70% of the damage done by meat products to society.
In their study, scientists focused primarily on public health outcomes, but indirectly referred to publications on the impact of CO2 emissions. Taxes reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100 million tons, mainly due to a decline in beef consumption.
