Folksbiene's "Roof Violin" production at National Yiddish Theater will be moved to Midtown Off-Broadway Stage 42 and preview will start on February 11, 2019. The opening is scheduled for February 21st.
Following the tales of Tevye and his family in Imperial Russian settlements in 1905, the musical ends at a museum in Manhattan Lower Jewish Heritage on 30th December.
Based on the work of Sholem Aleichem written in English by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein, this was the first show on Broadway in 1964. This musical was translated into Yiddish by Shraga Friedman and first performed in Israel in 1965.
The production has been extended four times since its July 4 performance in Yiddish, both in English and Russian, and was praised for its unexpected success.
It will be directed by Joel Gray, and Steven Skybell will replay Jackie Hoffman's role as Tevye, just like Yente. Production is handled by Hal Luftig and Jana Robbins.
