Elliott said, “It’s indefensible. Whether it was life or death, the horse was entitled to dignity. A moment of madness that I have to pay for the rest of my life and for which my staff suffers.
“I will be punished, I fully understand that. But it absolutely breaks my heart to read and hear people say I have no respect for my horses. That could not be further from the truth. My whole life has been since he revolved around horses I was a child.I know nothing else.Horses are all I have.I came from nothing and built a dream.
“When your world starts to crumble for you, it’s a scary place to be. I just hope people can understand how really sorry I am and find a way to forgive me for what I have done.”

Elliott, who released a statement confirming that the image was real on Sunday night, claimed that welfare is above his priorities with his horses.
He said: “I treat each of the horses I train with the utmost respect. We are proud to have the highest standards with the way we treat our horses, and our staff. I think our facilities here at Cullentra guaranteeing that. Horse and staff welfare is top of my priorities. I have invested heavily in outdoor areas for horses with breathing problems; we have vibrating massage tables; a swimming pool; renovated stables; a cooling area. We even bring horses to the beach on a regular basis for a distant day.The well-being of my horses, physically and mentally, is massive.
“I can guarantee this will never happen again to any animal, living or dead.”

Gordon Elliott: “My heart goes out to all my staff. I know how hard they work”
Elliott revealed that he had become aware of the image circulating while he was at Fairyhouse on Saturday.
“I got a call after the second to last race at Fairyhouse on Saturday and told me about the image that had appeared on social media,” he said. “My first reaction was that it might not have been me, but then the photo was sent to me and I realized it was. It was a few years ago.
“There were a lot of people who told me to say it was photoshopping, but the one thing that’s always told me in life is that when you start telling lies, you’ll finally tell lies for the rest of your life.
“I immediately realized the magnitude of the situation and thought of everything I had worked so hard for. I bought my garden nine years ago and the day I bought it I did not even have the security to pay for it. I have worked so hard to get where I am today.
“My heart goes out to all my staff. I know how hard they work. I know I not only failed them, but I also failed the entire racing industry. That’s to my stupidity. and I’m really, really sorry. “
