In order to assess the impact of this measure, In 2017 Inserm and the National Crisis Institute launched the DePICT study. (Description of tobacco-related previews, images and scrutiny). This study examined 2 different waves of 6,000 people representing the general population (4,000 adults and 2,000 per year) – one for the introduction of neutral packages, the other just one year later – on their science of smoking .

In adolescents from 12 to 17, the results of the study, which show one year after the introduction of neutral packages:

  • 1 in 5 youths (20.8%) test tobacco for the first time compared to 1 to 4 (26.3%) in 2016, even with regard to their demographic and socio-economic characteristics. This drop is highlighted by girls: 1 in 10 (13.4%) compared to 1 in 4 (25.2%);
  • Young people are more likely to have the risk of being harmful (83.9% against 78.9% in 2016) and reporting that they are alien to their effects (73.3% against 69.2%);
  • They are also less likely to assume their friends or family (16.2% against 25.4% and 11.2% against 24.6%);
  • Young smoker is also less in their brand of tobacco in 2017 compared to 2016 (23.9% vs. 34.3%).

According to the authors of the study, Maria Melchior and Fabienne El-Khoury, "These results show that the neutral package can contribute to demoralizing tobacco in young people and increasing their experimentation."They determined that"The overall effect would be the tobacco control policy, such as the introduction of neutral packages, increased prices and announced, and awareness campaignThe future studies focus on the impact of these awareness on regular conversations.
