High blood pressure is a condition in which the blood pressure in your arteries is consistently too high. Scientists from King’s College London added resveratrol to the diet of high blood pressure mice, and the findings were published in the journal Circulation.
The blood pressure of the rodents was monitored for 15 days, and at the end of the study period, those who ate a diet with the addition of resveratrol showed a decrease of about 20 millimeters of mercury.
Resveratrol was also found to relax the blood vessels of the rodents.
The authors concluded: “Resveratrol mediates lowering of blood pressure by paradoxically inducing protein oxidation, especially in times of oxidative stress, a mechanism that may be a common feature of ‘antioxidant’ molecules.”
