Poor or poor sleep can lead to atherosclerosis.

Taking less than 6 hours of sleep a day or taking a night of fragmented nights can increase the risk of atherosclerosis. The problem is characterized by the accumulation of fatty plaques on the walls of the arteries of the body. There is no symptom in the accumulation process, so it can be the first sign of illness if it does not take a long time to sleep. The conclusion is concluded by researchers from Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda University Hospital and National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) from Madrid, Spain.

– This study is a good message to ask yourself why you are having a bad night. It is a warning – says Brazilian member of the Vascular and Vascular Surgery Society of Sérgio Meirelles, Rio de Janeiro (SBACV-RJ).

The study included 3,974 middle-aged adults (63% male) who were monitored for 7 days to record their sleep quality and volume. Participants were divided into groups considering a very short sleep time of less than 6 hours. 6 to 7, short; 7 ~ 8, reference time; And over 8 hours.

After adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors and other health problems, the researchers found that patients with reduced sleep time and more ruptures are susceptible to atherosclerosis, and metabolic syndrome (a series of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes) .

– Atherosclerosis is a disease associated with aging. But some elements can start in the early stages of life – Sérgio explains.

An indication appears when there is already a complication.

Symptoms of the disease appear only if the artery is blocked and the blood can not reach the organ where it should be irrigated.

– If the femoral artery in the thigh is clogged, the patient may not walk well and may walk or have a foot injury. Carotid atherosclerosis is often a stroke. So it is generally silent and causes more complications when it appears – Julio Peclat, Director of Publications of Brazilian Angiology and Vascular Surgery (SBACV).

Diagnosis can be made by an arterial Doppler examination, a type of vascular ultrasonography that produces an image that allows the doctor to evaluate blood flow. If there is a disease, the plaque in the artery is corrected because it is present.
