Updated Qld Quarantine Service Calls | The Area News

Another locally acquired COVID-19 case has prompted Queensland’s chief health officer to renew calls for purpose-built quarantine facilities in the state. Queensland registered one locally acquired case of COVID-19 on Wednesday after a man completed hotel quarantine on July 17, before later developing symptoms and testing positive late Tuesday, ten days after leaving the hotel. He is believed to have been infectious in the community since last Thursday, and Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young says hotel quarantine does not work against the highly contagious Delta variant. “This is clearly inadequate protection, our current hotel arrangements, we need to adapt them,” she told reporters on Wednesday. “The Queensland government has been asking for another, many, many months now for a different quarantine model and I think that needs to be taken seriously.” Queensland has supported two purpose-built quarantine facilities, one at Brisbane Airport and another at Wellcamp in Toowoomba. Earlier this month, the government provided the Commonwealth with specifications for a 1,000-bed facility at Pinkenba Airport, initially capable of hosting 800 people for fourteen days and eventually increasing to 1,450. The Commonwealth rejected the site at Wellcamp. , because it does not meet expectations and was considered “inappropriate” by Health Secretary Greg Hunt in June. “In fact, I spoke with local member Garth Hamilton, who reaffirmed the strong overwhelming view of the local community against them,” Mr Hunt said earlier this month. However, Queensland has had 13 attacks from the virus in the last six weeks, and Dr Young says she is “very worried”. “That’s more than we’ve seen a long time before,” she said. “Most of them have been the Delta variant.” And because NSW registered the highest number of new COVID-19 cases last month, Queensland Heath’s Minister Yvette D’Ath called on the Commonwealth to clean up Australia’s vaccine supply. “Our risk factor has changed, we have thousands of people who are now positive in New South Wales, we have seen all jurisdictions that these cases are widespread and we see more in quarantine,” she said. “I want to know what’s going on today, what’s calling, what’s investigations, what’s going on at the Commonwealth level right now to not just wait for the offer we’ll get in October, but to get extra money now.” If we draw our other neighbors, our countries, our supporters and say you have extra supplies, can we get more Pfizer from you? Do they contact Pfizer and say we need more now? “Australian Associated Press
